#94 - Practical Pixels & Imprudent Imposters
Blog post here: battleswithbitsofrubber.com/94-practical-pixels-imprudent-imposters/
This time around we discuss the technical aspects of 3D modelling and printing for practical work, especially in creating detailed prosthetics and animatronic components using software like CAD and ZBrush.
We delve into teaching and learning new techniques, particularly the significance of hands-on experience in moulding and sculpting.
Then we look at taking on jobs without proper qualifications, highlighting the potential dangers and importance of safety in prosthetic and special effects work.

Makeup artists typically like makeup. It is a tactile medium, and they enjoy products, how they feel and smell and respond to brushes and pressure. These are great, I'm printing molds for my silicone medical task trainers as I'm listening to this. Being able to make the molds in Shapr3D and Nomad Sculpt has been a game changer. The ability to rapidly prototype changes without having to physically make new molds is amazing and saves so much time. Simply make the change and print a new mold. So much fun!

I worry that we spend a disproportionate amount of time being excited by the digital tools, so it’s nice to hear that someone is using them and still listening to us! I use sil blend by. Nimba. All the silicone colors seem to affect the consistency of the product. Basically ruining it. Would flocking powder be a better option.

    • @stuartbray
      @stuartbray 13 дней назад

      @@venom7774 In what way does the pigment ruin it? What brand of silicone pigment are you using? Flocking can work, but will gradually thicken the mixture as the proportion of fibres increase. For these thickened silicone pastes like 3rd Degree, Sculpt Gel etc. this is no bad thing. Curious to see how the silicone pigments you have used are ruining the material.

      @@stuartbray Neills. From British company. Just ordered kryolan to try that. I tried flocking and oh boy that was incredible. Thickened in a good way. And did not change the consistency. Blue flesh n RED especially are amazing. The silicone mix I mentioned is supposed to blend out seamlessly. I also learned to try gamsol to blend out edges even better. Any ideas about a SEAMLESS blend. The pigment neills just destroyed the consistency of the mixture. Stupidly I bought. A 6 range color of bottles. But I’m learning. Try one and see how it goes first.

      @stuartbray День назад

      @venom7774 it's definitely silicone pigments and not urethane pigments? Flawless blends are best with appliances made with cap plastic encapsulant barriers. With silicone pastes, the trick is to drag the still unset paste out to a fine edge before it sets and thickens. I'm curious how a small amount ifbpigment shoudk have such a catastrophic effect on the material. I've used those pigments for years with no issue. You can email me pics of the results if you like. See if we can figure out what went awry. stuartbray@yahoo.com

      This is Mac Wax, specifically a wax based release agent in a can. I find this is curiously harder to find outside the US. It ist a wood polish spray, but in a pinch i suppose that may work, but the spray is a fine mist and designed as a mould release in the UK.

    • @stuartbray

      It's a good question. You'll get a better result, with neater keys and consistent controlled thickness of silicone because all that is established with clay. I really like a continuous key around the edge, and it's easier to do this in clay. Brush on moulds work well for the sort term but I like to use a pure silicone without adding thickeners or accelerators etc. if possible which can reduce library life. I have also a done brush on mould video.

      If you are using a mould then you'll need a material which starts out as a liquid and then dries or cures to a flexible solid. There are a number of materials that have this property but latex and silicone are the most reliable and easily acquired. There are also flexible urethanes but these are smelly and unpleasant to use for masks. There are liquid neoprenes too but these are not easily found in the UK so I haven't used them

    regarding your air bubbles issue - it may be due to varying temperatures. One often gets this when varnishing classic yachts' teak, if one starts too early in the morning: you need to wait until it has warmed up and stabilised temperature-wise, with the aim for it to be if anything COOLING after the varnish is applied. This stops the substrate from gassing, as the cooling draws anything into the substrate, rather than pushing it out. So if possible I would try to warm the object up slightly, let it stabalise a bit above the ambient/room temperature, and then the gassing/bubbling will (hopefully) be minimised as the coating sets.
